Rib Cook Off Winner Announced
Congratulations "Fat Jack" Jack Poyneer! The winner of the 2nd Annual BBq Rib Cook Off at Post 1194 was announced Saturday. Jack was shocked that he won best ribs, his dream is to open his own BBq Rib place and call it Fat Jack Smoke Shack, and says this has given him more incentive to do so. Ten competitors from the community began as early as 4am BBqing their ribs for a public blind taste test and the chance to win the pellet smoker grill, but most of the cooks i've talked wanted the title won by Jesse Dutcher in 2019 of best ribs and the award to hang on their wall. Congratulations "Fat Jack" we will see you next year.
Post 1194 would like to thank Post 291 for hosting the 71st NYS American Legion Bowlers at Lucky Strikes. Everyone did an amazing job, very professionally done and the lanes were fabulous. What a great event!
Have you ever wondered what to do with your retired flags?
At Post 1194 you can drop them off anytime, day or night, in our red white and blue mailbox located at the entrance of the Post.
A statue of a saluting soldier wearing Vietnam-era gear now stands atop a tree stump in front of American Legion Post 1194 in Hillcrest.
The Legion had a large tree in their front yard that was dying and had to be removed, but the Sons and Auxiliary of the Legion had a good idea.
The statue was carved from the tree, sealed, and painted.
Sons Commander Mark Rinker says the Legion wanted to accurately express their appreciation for area veterans.
“Every time I do drive by, I get chills. We wanted to do it to thank all our veterans, and now I think that was a good way to thank them and appreciate what they do, what they have done for us and the community and the country,” says Rinker.
The tree itself had stood for close to 80 years in the Legion’s front yard. The statue has already gotten lots of attention from passers by.
